Sometimes living in Florida means an occasional brush with wildlife; in our case, a gator. This story was featured in the nwfdailynews recently when our daughter came face to face with a gator near our driveway. He ended up disappearing under the car until the fire department arrived to take the little guy back to the local creek. Thank goodness mom wasn't nearby.

Here are some first hand photos of our gator, you can read the article here: Niceville family has close encounter of the scaly kind

We pulled some great shots from the Genealogical Society of Okaloosa County that depict the early beginnings of Destin the surrounding towns and will be using them for a Flashback Friday feature on our website.

This particular photo is of the Brooks Bridge that connects Highway U.S. Route 98 over Santa Rosa Sound between downtown Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island. The original 1935 lift bridge was re-constructed in 1965 and increased to four lanes.

A study for a new replacement for the Brooks Bridge is currently underway.

no beach access trespassing signUnder attack for the lack of action regarding the issue of private and customary beach use, the Walton County commissioners have found a clever way to begin enforcing this. Chapter 22 of the Beach Ordinance dealing with "Leave No Trace" has been amended to include the placing of signs, poles, chains or roping off of what home owners feel is their gulf front property.

So, without actually addressing the question of customary use, these items are considered part of the beach clean-up ordinance and are to be removed. If homeowners refuse to take down the signs, chains, etc., they will be cited with a code violation. The commissioners are talking about having officers placed on every half mile of beach, enforcing the ordinance. They will also deal with…

Beachfront homesThe debate over customary vs private beach access in Destin and properties along the Emerald Coast is becoming more and more heated. Walton and Okaloosa Counties have miles of beach and how much of this should be designated public or "customary use" needs to be determined. For years, Destin beachfront property has been developed into magnificent resorts, homes, and condos, but now it's time to decide how much of that land is for private use only, and how much can be open to the public.

For city officials, this is a sensitive area where enforcement is not a straightforward task. As a result, they've employed the services of a law firm to decide whether a claim of customary use in Walton County will stand up. However, this type of research takes time,…

Shotgun start at the Marlin ClassicWhether fishing is your thing or not, the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic is an event that's not to be missed here in Destin. Established in 2003, this is a world-class event and one of the top marlin fishing tournaments in North America. Almost $2 million dollars in prize money is a big draw, but it's the bragging rights that really attracts anglers from all over the country. This is serious business with entry fees ranging from $5,000 to $71,561 per team.

It all begins on Thursday, June 23 at noon with a shotgun start, when close to 100 multi-million dollar fishing boats parade out of their respective marinas and shoot off through Destin Pass. It's not uncommon for these boats to travel 150 miles before reaching the perfect hunting ground.

Brooks Bridge in Fort Walton Beach FLQuite the crowd gathered for the recent meeting to discuss options for replacing or enlarging the Brooks Bridge in downtown Fort Walton Beach. The bridge was constructed in 1964 with an expected 50-year design life. It no longer meets current design standards with deficiencies in the Disabilities Act requirements and navigational clearance for this portion of the Intracoastal Waterway.

The Proposal

The objective is to achieve this larger bridge with the least intrusion into downtown Fort Walton Beach, or the destruction of the Publix shopping center and the Emerald Coast Convention Center. The Florida Department of Transportation presented a plan for a new bridge with the following attributes:

  • Three-lane bridge (currently 2 lanes)
  • Wide bike…

Raw & Juicy, Seaside juice barIf you've never been on Visitsouthwalton.com, it's a great little site that celebrates everything South Walton. Recently they had an interesting feature article about the origins of Raw & Juicy a popular Seaside juice bar. This story reminded me that so many of our local South Walton businesses have been founded by people who have accidentally discovered this amazing stretch of the Emerald Coast, and decided to stay.
